Welcome to the Birdcage

This is the home of a forum for Polyamorous people in New York State. Whether you live in Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, Olean, Ithaca, Potsdam, Southampton, Albany, Montauk, Sag Harbor or Sacket's Harbor -- if you live in, or have some connection with New York State and practice or are interested in any of the relationship styles known as polyamory, polyfidelity, or other related forms of responsible non-monogamy, then this is the place for you! We have online discussions about issues, news and experiences, and arrange local meet-ups wherever we have a large enough concentration of members so that people can put faces to the names.

We also provide a place for other local groups to help coordinate and publicize their own poly-related activities, to hopefully find a wider interested audience.

If you have questions about the relationship form known as polyamory we have a wide variety of people with different experiences, along with people who are currently struggling.  So whether you have questions to ask, or would just like to help other polyamorous people feel less like the misfits that society often paints us, we would like to welcome you.

Forum History

The forum was started up in a limited form in April of 2009, centered around Rochester, where a group of friends were looking to try to arrange regular get-togethers in a private forum. We have held monthly get-togethers around Rochester, in some form or another, since then. In October 2009 the forum was opened to outside applications, and rapidly grew to 50 members by the end of November 2009.

Get-togethers, usually in the form of a dinner at a local resturant, have been taking place around the state since then, based on the interests of the members. We have had meet-ups in Oswego, Albany, Utica and Owego, amongst others. In one month we had three meet-ups, plus coffee meets and movie outings.

After 6 months, the forum hit the 100 active member mark in May of 2010 and has been going strong ever since.

We strive to keep an active membership, and bring new, fresh ideas into play, to help people find ways to meet up with other like-minded poly folks, even if all they have are lots of questions!

In April of 2013, the last time this page was updated, we have just under 180 active members from all across the state, and still hold well-attended meet-ups in various areas.  We recently held a very successful "meet-and-greet" at the 2013 Rochester Erotic Arts Festival, and hope that we can perform more "outreach" in the future to help others to find their way to making polyamory work for them.
